The Katelyn Faith Davis Memorial Scholarship

The Katelyn Faith Davis Memorial Scholarship

The Katelyn Faith Davis Memorial Scholarship benefits students in need who are studying communications with an interested in sports journalism. This memorial scholarship was established by the Pokeno Girls in memory of Katelyn Faith Davis. The Pokeno Girls are a group of neighborhood friends who routinely gathered to share friendship and provide support to one another during good times and bad. Katelyn Davis, 18-year-old daughter of one of the Pokeno Girls and a sophomore at San Jacinto College, decided a couple of years ago that she wanted to become a sports reporter. Katelyn had suffered several years with Type I diabetes and epileptic seizures but that did not stop her from pursuing her dreams. In the summer of 2019 Katelyn, along with her service dog, Will, stayed with a long-time friend of the family who worked at the Washington Post. She began to fulfill her dream by working as an intern sports reporter at the Washington Post. She quickly made a name for herself as she interviewed several prominent players such as Washington Redskins, Vernon Davis, and Nationals All-Star, Anthony Rendon, who broke his “stay out of the media spotlight” rule. Sadly, Katelyn passed away in her sleep from complications associated with epilepsy one week before she was to arrive home. Katelyn loved helping other people and this scholarship honors her tenacity and drive to fulfill her dream and to help others to fulfill their dream too.
