1st Lieutenant Kile Grant West Memorial Scholarship

U. S. Army 1st Lieutenant Kile Grant West was one of 10 Americans killed in a volunteer mission in Iraq attempting to rescue the crew of a downed Apache Helicopter on Memorial Day 2007. Through his heroic actions of that day, Kile was awarded The Army Bronze Star for Heroism and The Purple Heart.

Kile is a Texas Hero who grew up in Pasadena, attending Jenson and Turner Elementary Schools and Bondy Intermediate School. He later moved with his mother to Round Rock, Texas and attended C.D. Fulkes for his 8th grade year and ultimately graduated from Hutto High School. Kile received his BA from Stephen F. Austin University and had his commencement into the U.S. Army in December of 2005. He had his officer basic training in Fort Sill, OK, then was stationed in June 2006 at Fort Hood, Texas. He was deployed to Iraq on October 3, 2006 to serve his country. He had high standards and felt strongly about getting a college education before his tour of duty in the Army. This scholarship was established in tribute to Kile, and offers assistance to selected students attending San Jacinto Community College.
